🖥️ Microsoft Licensing for On-Call, Relief or Short- Term Employees
As of Spring 2025, Selkirk College has implemented a revised Microsoft licensing model. This approach helps us stay compliant with Microsoft’s terms and manage software costs more effectively.
📋 What’s Changed?
Employees with a 0% FTE—such as relief instructors or short-term contracts—are now assigned an A1 Microsoft license. This includes:
✅ Access to web-based Microsoft Office apps through office.com
✅ Use of Email, Microsoft Teams, and OneDrive
It does not include:
🚫 Access to desktop-installed versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
💡 Why This Model?
Complies with Microsoft licensing rules
Helps manage costs while ensuring access to essential tools
Still supports key tasks like grading, worksheets, and collaboration
👥 Who This Applies To
This licensing model applies to employees with a 0% FTE (Full-Time Equivalent), including but not limited to:
Relief instructors (e.g. short-term instructional contracts over the summer or during specific terms)
On-call or casual employees
Employees between contracts (e.g. faculty not actively assigned workload between teaching terms)
Employees with future-dated contracts (e.g. start date is in the future, but their account is active)
Employees currently on a leave of absence
If you’re unsure of your FTE status or how this affects your access, please contact your supervisor or reach out to HR or IT Services.
🔧 Recommended Workflow
We strongly recommend using Microsoft Teams for storing and collaborating on files. Teams is fully compatible with the web versions of Office and allows for:
Real-time shared editing
Centralized access to course materials
Easier collaboration across instructors
🔄 Still using shared drives? We’re happy to help move your files into Teams.
