How to set up a Yubikey token for account authentication

Before you get Started

Before you can add a Yubikey to your account, you will need to:

  1. Register for Multi-Factor authentication/two-factor authentication (2FA).

  2. Get your Yubikey from the Selkirk College Bookstore. Add it to your keychain if you want, through the reinforced loop in the middle, write your name on the back with a sharpie if there is space.  

Set up your Yubikey

  1. Log into your Microsoft Account - https://myaccount.microsoft.com/

  2. Go to Security info select + Add method

    1. To add a method, you will need to authenticate with your default sign-in method.  This will be a phone call or text to the number you registered for authentication. It can be an office phone with a local extension, you are not required to use your personal cellphone, but it will be easier. 

  3. From the dropdown menu select Security key

  4. You will now need to authenticate using the default phone number in the initial set-up.

    1. Enter the authentication code

    2. Create a PIN for your security key.

    3. Select USB device Security Key

    4. Have your Yubikey ready to insert into your computer's USB port

       

    5. Insert your Yubikey into a USB port

       

    6. Click OK to continue setup

       

    7. Touch your Yubikey to continue setup

    8. Enter a security key name - ideally your first and last name, into the field provided

  5. Confirm the You're all set! notification to complete setup.
